I almost attributed the “Who Makes What” article to filling space the first time it was in the Summit Daily. But when it was posted again as a “correction,” bells went off. The subtitle was “Incomes and Salaries in Colorado Mountain Communities,” so wouldn't one assume that there would be a balanced selection of jobs? However, the types of jobs listed in the public sector were not even close in comparison to the jobs in the private sector, thus attempting to prove that public sector salaries are much higher than private sector salaries. Comparing apples and oranges, I'd say.
Almost all of the public jobs highlighted were high ranking or professional positions requiring higher education training. All the jobs shown in the private sector were minimum-wage jobs, if not slightly higher. Excuse me, with the exception of real estate brokers and lawyers — rather strange additions. Correct private section comparisons would have been heads of companies, marketing professionals, technical IT folks, corporate secretaries, financiers, etc. How did this chart show us “who makes what”? May I ask who or what group is responsible for submitting this chart?
You have to live on Mars to not realize there has been and will continue to be an assault on public workers. I was a teacher for 27 years, loved it, and felt like I contributed to the betterment of America. We have a wonderful community here in Summit County, so let's stop being so divisive and start working together.
Editor's note: The chart was simply meant to be a representative sample of different types of jobs and comparisons to some of the same in other areas.
