On the Hill: Checking out a secret log jib on Peak 9 in Breckenridge

January 25, 2015 —

On the Hill is brought to you by The Steadman Clinic and the Steadman Philippon Research Institute.

VIDEO: Our faithful snow correspondent ZGriff takes us to a little log on Peak 9 and gives a shout to friend and roommate Yanna on her birthday and a shout to the inventor of the TV host position and NY icon Joe Franklin who passed away yesterday at 88 for Sunday Skool.

Breckenridge official report: 0" 0" 0"

Summit Daily field report: It is a very warm morning and the high today is 40 degrees. Some strong wind gusts on the lift but not bad on the runs or in the trees. There is a cloud cover and a small amount of snow falling.

Weather: High of 40 degrees and a low of 25 degrees with gusts of wind. Mostly cloudy and low light.

Lift lines: Some people on the bus and milling around the base area but not crowded this morning on the lifts.

Breakdown: It is a nice warm morning here in Summit with cloud cover. The snow is soft and the groomers are excellent. There is even a bit of wind depositing and buff. The snow is soft enough everywhere to rip. There are a lot of avalanche bombs going off as patrol attempts to stabilize after the flux in temp and it is interesting to note how much louder they are without fresh snow to absorb the sound.

Sunday Skool: Yesterday Joe Franklin passed away at 88. Franklin was who most credit with inventing the position of TV host. His show aired from the 1950s until 1993 and he embodied NY city and the time and shaped the world of tv broadcast.

VIDEO: Summit Daily snow correspondent Zach Griffin crushes some Peak 10 groomers at Breckenridge Ski Resort.

Breckenridge official report: 0’ 0’ 0’

Summit Daily field report: It is a grey bird morning and cold temp at 0 degrees. Forecast calling for it to warm up to a high of 36 degrees. No wind and the snow is good.

Weather: No new snow but a high of 36 degrees and a low of 18 means it will soften the snow and be good turning. Mostly cloudy but may burn off a bit as the sun gets high in the sky. Wind around 16 mph also in the forecast.

Lift lines: Saturday crowds may arrive as the day goes on. The X-Games in Aspen draws a lot of visitors away from Summit this weekend which is good for lift lines.

Breakdown: It was a cold night and morning but the day will warm up nicely. The snow is in great condition. Hike-to stuff is going to be ripping when it warms up some. Grey bird light conditions out there so bring the right lenses. There is a Colorado ski race event with age group heats happening on Peak 10 if you want to witness some gate bashing.

VIDEO: ZGriff's final On the Road broadcast brings the team back to Trollhaugen: Friday nights at Troll are an all-night party where the lifts spin until 3 a.m. and there is live music. The family/community vibe is strong here and the progressive nature of the Midwest parks is amazing to see. The enthusiasm of the next generation here reminded me what I felt when I started and why I love snowboarding so much to this day. The people and the places along the way were amazing and the kindness and generosity was truly heartwarming. Thank you all again and thanks for tuning in to OnTheRoad and remember to tune in to episodes of OnTheHill at Summitdaily.com from back in Summit this week.

Much love and thanks to the good people at Troll for extending us the invite and for showing us such a good time. We get to see some incredible relics from shred history including the original SledDogs, an alpine surfer and also an original Surfer signed by Sherman Poppen and written on it "the Beginning" 1965. The most amazing piece of memorabilia I've ever held in my hands.
