The Amazing Life of Shane Schaumburg (Obituary)

Shane Schaumburg of Breckenridge, Colorado, passed away at his home on Thursday June 18, 2015.

Shane was born Dec. 31, 1959, in Casa Grande, Arizona. Later he moved with his family to the Minneapolis area, and finally to Breckenridge in 1972. He was a ski patrolman from 1978 to 2011 at many locations including Aspen Highlands, Copper Mountain, Breckenridge Ski Resort, and in New Zealand during which time he ran innumerable rescues and saved many lives. He also was a scuba divemaster in Palau and Thailand.

Shane had a great love for life and adventure, from the mountains to the oceans. He enjoyed high intensity skiing, biking, scuba diving, kayaking and hiking. Shane survived a few near-death experiences including crazy whitewater kayaking incidents from which his brother Greg had to save him at least once. He was in Phuket, Thailand, when the devastating tsunami of 2004 hit and stayed to provide assistance in the aftermath. He managed to survive a couple of avalanches while ski patrolling, one that broke his back, and he once had a tree fall on his tent while camping.

Shane was known for telling great stories that may have even stretched into tall tales a time or two but would keep everyone either hanging on the edge of their seat or laughing in disbelief.

Shane had a loving spirit and cared deeply for his family and friends. He spent the past 14 years traveling with the love of his life Tracy. He would meet up with her in many exotic places from Nepal to Fiji; there were always several trips on the horizon. Shane loved the children of Lombok, Indonesia, and was looking forward to many future trips to the island to help his close friends improve and sustain a village kindergarten. He also spent a lot of time in the Aspen/Basalt area with his family with whom he shared many gifts from his world travels. His family will sorely miss his great energy, his joyful spirit, and his generosity, not to mention his great cooking, crazy stories and constant sense of adventure.

Shane is survived by: his girlfriend Tracy Napp, his siblings: Greg Schaumburg, Heidi Beattie, John (Angie) Schaumburg, Joe (Janel) Schaumburg, four nieces, three nephews, and his stepfather Richard Slater.

In lieu of flowers, donations to fund the Lombok Paud Anak Ceria 2 kindergarten can be sent to: MAJI, 208 South 4th St. Stillwater, MN 55082. Attn/memo: Shane Schaumburg Memorial Fund

A Celebration of Life ceremony for Shane will be held at a later date. The family would love to receive cards or letters with stories and fond memories of Shane’s life. Please send to his sister: Heidi Beattie, PO Box 137, Breckenridge, CO 80424.
