Man arrested for explosives found in cabin

BRECKENRIDGE - Around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, officers arrested David James "Buckwalt" Walt "in the City Market parking lot in Breckenridge on an outstanding warrant stemming from explosive devices found in a cabin he lived in," according to a Sheriff's Office statement.

On June 1, the landlord of the cabin and two other witnesses called police to the cabin one mile east of the B&B Mine Placer on County Road 565. Intending to clean out the cabin, the three found a metal pipe, a trip wire and a shotgun shell in the driveway.

Sheriff's deputies contacted the bomb squad of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. The bomb squad arrived a short while later and searched the cabin further, finding five empty tubes of a liquid explosive, fuses and a detonation cord. Investigators found other bomb-making equipment, as well.

According to a Sheriff's Office statement released shortly after the discovery, the explosives had the potential power to destroy the cabin and anything within a 25-yard radius.

"It could have been pretty bad," Summit County Sheriff Joe Morales said at the time the explosives were discovered. "Luckily, they noticed the stuff immediately and contacted us."

Witness reports led authorities to suspect Walt might have been involved in rigging the cabin with explosives.

Tuesday, an individual the sheriff's office said remained anonymous at the time of its report recognized Walt and called authorities.

As of Tuesday evening, Walt was being booked into the Summit County Jail.

The sheriff's report stated that "Walt was very cooperative and was arrested without incident. He is currently in the Summit County Jail being held on a $50,000 cash or surety bond."
