Remember the nonprofits

SUMMIT COUNTY - Tax time is rarely a pleasant one, but two Summit County nonprofits hope local taxpayers will add a dollar to their tab.

Colorado income tax returns provide five different "checkoff" boxes, allowing taxpayers to chip in to different causes. Summit County Advocates for Victims of Assault and the Dillon-based Family and Intercultural Resource Center are two of those that benefit.

Previously, there were only two such checkoff options - one for the Colorado Coalition Against Domestic Violence and one for the state's parks and recreation department. Giving opportunities have expanded, however, as state budgets have decreased and individual donations have dropped off.

Regan Wood, director of the Advocates, said the money taxpayers donate will stay in Summit County. Wood sits on the board of the Colorado Coalition Against Domestic Violence and said she's pushed hard to allocate funds to mountain community programs.

The Advocates organization operates a shelter for men, women and children in Summit County. The tax checkoff money helps pay for food, medication, clothing and other items families need while staying at the shelter.

"Last year, we received 2,562 calls to our agency," Wood said. "We provided one-on-one advocacy to 269 women, sheltered 30 women, 33 children and five men for a total of 796 nights of shelter."

The state's family resource centers have been publicizing the checkoffs with Denver Nuggets' standout Carmelo Anthony. The donations support family centers' efforts in parenting classes, emergency assistance and other services.
