For the thousands of Park County folks who read the Summit Daily News: A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity has come to Park County residents. We have the chance to write in Rob Raskiewicz for sheriff.
I met Raskiewicz about a year ago in Alma. I knew within a few minutes there was something special about this guy. He seemed to have a true compassion to serve his community. He was friendly, appeared to be sincere, and, lets face it, I can't remember many cops besides Raskiewicz going out of their way to wave or say hello when I would pass by.
I was still skeptical. However, bopping around the county this year, I repeatedly encountered locals talking positively about Rob. He had truly gained the respect of the community.
I might point out that being politically active for more than 20 years, I go out of my way to know my local officials, also including the police. Ask one and see if we've met.
Raskiewicz seems to be concerned about keeping us safe in a manner that doesn't alienate him (as a law enforcement officer) from the community that he is entrusted to protect.
Since that time, I've had many hours of discussion with Raskiewicz, and I believe his community-oriented approach is the kind of law enforcement that's right for Park County. He pointed out that a lot of resources are wasted on tail light or other petty offenses, while real crimes go with little or no attention.
In 1999, I was the victim of burglary and vandalism. At 38 years old, ninety-five percent of all my property was stolen or destroyed in an attack.
I tried for seven weeks to get a deputy to take a report. I finally gave up. It happened again in 2000, same M.O., recognizable graffiti still there. Even though this time, Deputy Mike Brown finally took a report, that was it. The Denver Post wrote a story on it. Crimestoppers was waiting for the police report, but the Park County Sheriff's Office has yet to help me with this situation.
By the way, you guys in the Sheriff's Office whom I've met or spoken to, including Fred, Monte, Greg, the two Brices, the two Dons, Mike, Pappy, Carmel, Richard, Ed, Sheri and others; I still invite you to investigate this, please.
Raskiewicz assures me this is the kind of crime he will make a priority.
Lets write in Raskiewicz. A true champion of the common man.
