CLEAR CREEK COUNTY - The 2004-2005 Colorado ski season officially begins at 9 a.m. today when Loveland opens three runs to people waiting to be the first rider to hit the slopes.
Wednesday, 12 inches of new snow fell on the resort's base and 18 inches at the top of the mountain, enabling it to be the first ski area in the United States to open for the season, said Kevin Wright, marketing director for the ski area.
Loveland is minutes away from Summit County on the east side of the Eisenhower Tunnel.
Ski area officials will open chairlift No. 1, which serves "Catwalk," "Mambo" and "Home Run" ski runs. Together, the three are a top-to-bottom run covering more than a mile in length and 1,000 vertical feet.
Base depths vary from 18 to 24 inches, and snowmaking efforts will enable the ski area to open more terrain as conditions permit.
Opening day festivities will include a rail jam expression session featuring local pro riders at 8:30 a.m. and a rail jam competition open to the public at 1 p.m., weather permitting.
Skiers and riders will receive free Power Bar Bites with the purchase of a lift ticket while supplies last. Complimentary donuts, hot chocolate and coffee will be given to the first 300 people in the lift line.
KSMT radio will broadcast live from the bottom of Chair No. 1 and provide a countdown for the nation's first chair of the season.
Representatives from Emage Snow and Skate, Santa Cruz, Salomon and other snow sports companies will be on-site showcasing 2004-2005 products.
And the day's festivities will conclude with an après ski party sponsored by Tommyknocker Brewery at the Rathskeller Bar.
Friday's lift tickets will cost $34 for adults and $16 for children ages 6 to 14. The ski area's discounted season pass and "4-Pak" sales have been extended through November 15. Season passes and "4-Paks" are available online at
