Frisco opens free Wi-Fi hot spots

FRISCO - Locals and visitors on the road but needing to check their e-mail can take advantage of two new Wi-Fi spots town officials have opened in an effort to help market Main Street.

One is in the Frisco Town Hall at First and Main, open now, and the other is in the Frisco/Copper Information Center in the Old Town Hall at Third and Main. Wi-Fi there becomes available Dec. 1.

The sites provide free high-speed wireless internet access for any computer including notebooks, tablet PCs or Pocket PCs that are Wi-Fi enabled.

Wi-Fi, short for wireless fidelity, is a technology built into computers that allows them to plug into the internet without hooking into a network or telephone line.

For now, Wi-Fi is available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the lower floor atrium of town hall. The T-1 connection is 50 times faster than traditional dial-up services.

Call the information center at (970) 668-5547 to learn its hours of operation.

"Frisco is offering this free wireless internet service as part of an innovative way to market Main Street and enhance economic development in the town," said economic and community development director Mark Gage.

"Frisco joins a growing number of cities, hotels and restaurants across the nation that have realized that providing this perk for a relatively small capital investment attracts visitors," Gage said.

Guidelines for getting mobile-smart and accessing the service will be available at both sites.

Setup is simple if the computer or PDA is Wi-Fi enabled. A wireless networking card can be purchased directly from the computer manufacturer or from major electronics retailers.

Before you attempt to use any wireless access, be sure your computer or device is enabled.

Town hall staff will not be available for any support or technical questions.

Frisco officials ask that users respect the free access and do not abuse the service. VailNet will be monitoring the use of the access and will notify the town of any overuse.

Rules for use of the wireless internet access will also be posted at each site.

For information, call Jocelyn Mills at town hall at (970) 668-5276, ext. 3031.
