Q: What type of business do you operate - what do you sell, or what service do you provide?

A: High Road Sports assists skiers and boarders in finding the perfect rental equipment for their individual needs. The store also provides repair and tune services, as well as a limited equipment retail sales service. The shop carries lines of accessories, gifts and one-of-a-kind arts and crafts.

Q: Where are you from and why did you decide to open your business in Summit County?

A: Originally from Iowa, the Garsts have lived in Colorado for the past 28 years. Ike came to the state to work for the Keystone ski area in 1976. After marrying Lucy the next year, they bought the Berthoud Pass ski area. Since moving to the Denver metropolitan area in 1987, they have been looking forward to moving back to the mountains.

Q: What experience do you have in this field?

A: The family operated the four-season Berthoud Pass resort for 10 years. In addition to their experiences at Berthoud Pass, Ike managed a ski area in Minnesota prior to coming to Colorado. In the late '70s while the Garsts were the managers, Berthoud Pass became the first ski area to allow snowboarders to use the lifts and runs. Beth Garst (Ike and Lucy's oldest daughter, who is the manager of High Road Sports) has worked at Mountain View Sports in Dillon, during holiday breaks, for 12 years.

Q: What sets your business apart from other similar businesses?

A: High Road will offer name-brand equipment at discounted rates to allow skiers and boarders to realize real value for their recreational dollars. In addition, High Road is locally-owned and operated, unique and family-run. Our staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and able to address your needs on a one-on-one basis.

Q: What types of customers do you hope to reach in Summit County?

A: By offering seasonal rentals and affordable services, High Road aims to attract a segment of the local population. Our affordable rates are also geared to attract visitors to the county. First-time skiers or boarders, as well as visiting friends and family of local residents, will find a comfortable and welcoming environment at High Road.

Q: Why did you choose to open where you did?

A: Our location, just a mile off of Interstate 70, is ideal for easy accessibility. We are located close to a number of great businesses that provide a wide range of services and merchandise. We are between two well-known businesses in the county - Starbucks and Wal-Mart.

Q: What are your plans for your company's future?

A: We will be here for the long-term to serve the needs of the skiers, boarders and locals in the Frisco area. Next year, the store will expand to make better use of the internet for reservations and retail sales. The gift and accessory lines will also expand. The shop carries a number of lines from local and Colorado artists that are only available at this shop.
