"If you bungle raising your children, I don't think whatever else you do matters very much."
- Jacqueline Kennedy
Parents generally share the former first lady's commitment to the welfare of their children in their thoughts and actions as they begin the difficult task of caring for a newborn infant.
Initially, it is simply a task of providing food, clothing, shelter, and a nurturing environment.

As the child grows, education and preparation for independent living becomes a clear priority.
Public schools provide an essentially free educational opportunity, but also an unavoidable experience of communal child rearing.
Children learn from their parents and each other the expectations that their community has of them.
These expectations shape their behavior not only as they mature into young adults but also for the rest of their lives.
It is during these critical years that we can fulfill our important commitment to give our children the greatest gift: the opportunity to succeed.
It is well known that teenagers explore and test their capabilities and limitations, see themselves as immortal, and are likely to take risks that more experienced adults can and should help the child moderate.

Experimentation with drugs and alcohol is a common teenage behavior that families face both individually, and as a community.
Guiding our children through these difficult times is perhaps the most important and difficult task of being a parent, a task that requires parents to dig deep into their own capabilities and resources to meet the challenge.
It is also well known that a child's involvement with drugs and alcohol can significantly interfere with success in school, and maturation into the responsibilities of adulthood.
Summit School District recognizes the challenges faced by our community as a resort that attracts vacationers and young workers seeking excitement and entertainment.
Our children grow up in an environment where extreme sports glorify risk taking behavior, and brewing companies sponsor major events.

Workshop
Workshop on the Impacts of Drug and Alcohol Use on Student Learning. Speakers will present surveys on current trends and effects of substance abuse on growing bodies
6:30-8:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 9 Where: Summit High School Auditorium |
The Summit School District, as the primary setting for our effort of communal child rearing, is seeking community input on the issue of drug and alcohol use at an upcoming forum at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 9 at Summit High School.
In collaboration with the Drug Free Communities Coalition, we are gathering community comment for strategies we can implement to confront these issues and how we can collectively support our children.
Speakers will present information from surveys about current trends in local behavior, the physiological effects of drugs and alcohol on the growing body, and their effects on learning and maturation.
We would like to invite parents, students, community leaders and everyone interested to join us for this meeting, to share ideas, observations and opinions on this important issue.
S. Garrett Sullivan, M.D., sits on the Summit School Board of Education.
