FRISCO - The number of participants for this year's Romp to Stomp Out Breast Cancer has doubled - and the event is still a month away.
The 3k or 5k snowshoe walk on gentle snow-covered terrain takes place Saturday, March 5, at the Frisco Nordic Center.
Tubbs Snowshoes and the Denver Metropolitan Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation team up to raise money for breast cancer research, education and screening through the event.
One-hundred percent of all pledges and proceeds help the Komen Foundation, and that helps Summit County locals because last year, the foundation expanded its service area to include Summit County.
As a result, nonprofits in Summit County can apply for grants to provide breast cancer prevention services to women in need.
Last year, the affiliate awarded $42,760 to Summit County Family Planning to provide services to 200 under- or uninsured women in Park and Summit counties.
In addition, volunteers from the Komen foundation will organize breast cancer education at local schools, churches, health fairs and other community events, including the Romp to Stomp.
Last year's event raised more than $40,000, said Joan Davids, event coordinator.
This year, she expects to raise more because volunteers passed out 5,000 informational cards at Denver's Race for the Cure in October and at local registration sights for the race, which is bringing in more participants.
Davids considers the wintry event to be a smaller sister to the Race for the Cure.
"It's a warm, intimate kind of gathering," Davids said. "Everybody always has a great time. It's very upbeat."
"It's important because it gets everybody involved," said Pat DeCarli, a Breckenridge resident who had breast cancer (see related story). "We're trying to be supportive and raise money for people who don't have the money to fight breast cancer. We do all we can because we want to support the people here. We're a small community, where everyone rallies."

Every participant with pledges will receive raffle tickets to possibly win items ranging from lodging, shopping and restaurant certificates to Tubbs items. The top three people who raise the most money will win prizes - the winner earning $1,000 worth of items.
Plus, Wells Fargo will serve a free pancake breakfast, and Nancy Cook will entertain with acoustic favorites.
People who can't make it to the event can participate by registering for the Snowed In category for $20, which comes with a T-shirt.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 5, and the walk starts at 9:30 a.m. An optional 3k snowshoe fun run starts at 9 a.m. More than 300 pairs of Tubbs snowshoes will be available free of charge on a first come, first served basis. Davids recommends carpooling, as March 5 is a busy weekend in the county.
Registration costs $18 in advance. For more information, visit www.tubbsromptostomp.com or call Davids at (970) 513-9898.
