SUMMIT COUNTY - The Summit County SWAT team has been recognized for its role in arresting the Mr. Magoo bank robbery suspect in March.
The Colorado Association of Robbery Investigators and the Safe Streets Task Force - a division of the FBI and Denver Metro units - commended the team for its outstanding work in locating Tyler Timothy Hamilton, also known as Mr. Magoo.
Hamilton was a suspect in a spree of 24 bank robberies that occurred in the Denver area from December 2004 until March 2005.
He was arrested at his parents' cabin on Quandary Road in Blue River during an early morning raid on March 26.
FBI agents and the Summit County SWAT team surrounded the cabin after receiving a tip from the FBI that Hamilton may have been hiding in the area.
Summit County's SWAT team is comprised of 14 people from all the law enforcement agencies in the county and trains together twice a month.
Summit County Undersheriff Derek Woodman said the team has never been recognized by an outside organization.
"(Federal agents) were pretty pleased to get this guy in custody. He was a pretty big threat to the area, and they'd dumped a tremendous amount of resources into it," Woodman said. "They were outrageously impressed in the high quality and fashion that (the operation) was taking place."
Hamilton has been charged with six counts of felony bank robbery, each of which carries a sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine. He pleaded not guilty to the crimes on April 21.
His case is tentatively scheduled to be heard by a jury trial on June 20.
