A change in scenery can be refreshing both personally and professionally. For Summit Cove resident Maria Markel, lead designer and co-owner of Markel Design Group now located in Frisco, moving her interior design business from Breckenridge to the other side of the county made business sense.

"It definitely gives us more of a central location," Markel explained. Her 4-year-old business services mostly residential clients - both primary and second homeowners - located from Breckenridge to the Keystone Ranch and into the Vail Valley.

Location aside, her new Frisco digs also allow Markel and her in-house designers to display furniture, goods and exhibits of their prior work in a new 1,000-square-foot open showroom.

"It allows our clients to touch, feel and visualize what they want, so we can facilitate their dreams," she said.

While Markel's design business is just four years old, she has been a fixture in the local interior design world for more than 18 years. She's lived in Summit County since 1985, and prior to opening her own business, worked for Keystone and Vail Resorts, managing Keystone's interior design department.

Over the years, and aside from high-end homes, she's designed the interiors for a host of local spots, including Keystone's Alpenglow Stube Restaurant, the Park Avenue Pub in Breckenridge, as well as the Great Divide Lodge also in Breck. Today, though, Markel's business is focused mostly on residential projects.

Running her business is a family affair, too. Markel's husband Roger is a co-owner and active manager of the company, in addition to working for Copper Mountain as director of leisure sales and travel. When she's not working, Maria values most her time spent with family, which includes two young daughters, 4-year-old Maddi and 6-year-old Hanna, as well as her beloved golden retriever Rossi.

What do you like best about your job?

"I would say, literally, working with the clients and watching their homes develop right before their eyes."

How would you describe your style?

"I like to use things that won't be dated. In other words, if it was 100 years old, then in 200 years it could still work. Although I love contemporary projects, as far as a personal style goes, I go for timeless designs. But, I pretty much follow the client's style."

Why choose Summit County for your home?

"Skiing, mostly, but the summer lifestyle as well. I mean, you could spend almost every day outside in Summit County."
