BRECKENRIDGE The Gentlemen of the Blue Goose Rugby Club needed to play its best match of the season Sunday if it was to have any chance of defeating mountain powerhouse Aspen in the semifinals of the Ski Town Tournament.
It didnt quite go down that way.
Following its three victories on Saturday, the local club was plagued by a lackluster start on Sunday, leading to Aspens 28-3 victory.
We played great in the second half, Goose president Ron Reyes said. But we were pretty flat in the beginning.
With its commanding 21-0 halftime lead, it looked as though Aspen might shut out the Goose on its home field. Joe Pizzi made sure that didnt happen, however, by converting a three-point kick in the second half.
Vail squeaked past Steamboat, 14-12 in the other semifinal, before going on to blank Aspen the team with the most titles in Ski Town Tournament history 3-0 in the finals.
There was no consolation match, but according to Reyes, a beer-drinking boat race would potentially be used to decide third place.
The Goose has upcoming Mountain Mens Union matches against Steamboat and Glenwood Springs.
