Fire damages Breck home under construction

BRECKENRIDGE - Firefighters from Breckenridge's Red, White and Blue Fire Department extinguished a small fire at a home under construction in Breckenridge on Tuesday.

Firefighters were called to 350 Timber Trail at 6:45 p.m., and observed flames inside the 6,500 square foot home.

The crew forced entry through the front door and quickly put out the fire. Damage was contained to the floor area and on one log column inside of the house. Firefighters did not find any extension of the fire into the walls or other floors.

Fire investigators determined that the cause of the fire was unintentional and appeared to have started when building materials fell onto a propane space heater that was turned on at the time.

The blaze did about $30,000 in damage to the home, which is owned by Colorado Springs resident Rodger Sung according to the Summit County's property records.

"Luckily for everyone involved, an observant citizen was walking his dog at the time, noticed the fire and called 911," said Battalion Chief Lori Miller. "He actually went into the house, turned off the propane heater and dragged it outside the house."

"While we applaud his courageous efforts, generally, we strongly urge citizens not to enter a house on fire," said Capt. Kim Scott. "Personal safety is our number one concern and we hope that people seriously consider all of the consequences before making that decision."

The fire department reminds contractors to follow the manufacturers' guidelines on minimum clearance around space heaters. Red, White and Blue recommends at least a 3 foot clearance around such heaters.
