Summit Countians Susanna (formerly Virden) and Michael Sharp, aboard the Bluewater after the first big snowstorm in December near Valdez, Alaska. The newlyweds say,"If we thrived being alone on a sailboat 24/7 for six months, we can take on the world!"
Special to the Daily
Good morning and welcome to Summit Up, the world's only daily column proving once again that internet dating actually works.
Case in point: Susanna (formerly Virden) and Michael Sharp — two Summit County folks who connected via bits and bytes, and who now file this report of their whirlwind, worldwide honeymoon.
"My husband Michael and I, along with Nisa the Wonderdog (aka The Admiral), are experiencing a great adventure and we just wanted to send out a hello and Happy New Year from the Great White North to our Summit County friends. We got married last March and left the next month to move onto our 36' sailboat. We sailed from Oregon and up the Inside Passage to Valdez, Alaska, with five pair of skis aboard, and now we're here to ski the Chugach Range (the snow is ridiculous: more than 107" in December IN town and we can expect several hundred more). This summer, we'll head west toward Kodiak and the Aleutian Islands. It's our hope to keep this up as long as it's fun and we can continue to find creative ways to feed ourselves and pay for dog food.
"We wanted to announce that WE MADE IT! and to thank everyone for their support, general cheerleading and favorite recipes from home. We always appreciate notes and newsy bits from home, so please send more. Also, we keep updating our site at
www.adventurefreaks.org to share news and photos from our summer adventure and now the epic skiing in Valdez. COME FOR A VISIT! Alaska is amazing!"
Boy, these two are testing the marriage bonds in a big way right off the bat! Safe travels ...

A Scum Alert!! Scum Alert!! goes out from one of our readers, who sent us this note:
"I was driving home on the Dam road after a movie on Saturday night, and the truck in front of me (Nevada plates) threw a cigarette butt out the window. I know this is probably not as bad as someone stealing stuff, or beating someone up or vandalizing places, but it has to stop. Why do people think that throwing cigarette butts wherever they feel like isn't littering or polluting or making our lovely Summit County scummy? And, lots of people do it ... out the window of their vehicles, off the chairlift, standing around outside anywhere, in the lake, at the campgrounds, etc. If you must smoke, dispose of your butts properly. PLEASE!"
We agree. And we agree with the capital letters on please, too.

We out, redesigning our MySpace page so our allegiance to "One Tree Hill" isn't so obvious.
