Local Dillon Valley man accused of harassing Brother Nathanael

SILVERTHORNE — Police arrested a Dillon Valley man on harassment charges on earlier this week after he allegedly yelled threatening and taunting statements on two separate occasions at street evangelist Milton Kapner, also known as Brother Nathanael.

According to a press release from the Silverthorne Police Department, Officer Zach Kephart arrested 51-year-old Warren W. Smith on Tuesday afternoon. Kephart was called to the corner of Highway 9 and Wildernest Road, where Kapner regularly dances and waves his cross, at about 4:45 p.m. for a report of harassment. Kapner told Kephart that Smith, who was standing on the opposite side of the highway, was yelling at him.

Kephart interviewed a witness, who said that she heard Smith “yelling threatening and taunting statements” at Kapner, the release said.

At the time, Smith was holding a flagpole with both an American flag and a pirate flag on it. A 3-foot sword and a skull were also on the pole.

Tuesday’s incident was the third time Silverthorne Police were summoned to a situation involving Smith or Kapner this week.

On Monday morning, Kapner reported that Smith was chasing and threatening him at the same intersection. Kapner told the officer that he knew Smith, and that Smith sometimes drives him around. A witness verified that Smith was threatening Kapner. The officer cited Smith with harassment.

Then, on Tuesday police received a report of harassment on the corner of Highway 9 and Rainbow Drive. Smith told the officer he’d been harassed by a passing car, but didn’t want to lodge a formal complaint. Less than an hour later, officers were called to the incident at Highway 9 and Wildernest, at which time they arrested Smith.

A message left at Smith’s home was not returned Thursday morning. He is due in Summit County Court on Feb. 14.
