No passes at Steamboat ski resort ... yet

VANCOUVER, BC - Intrawest's purchase of Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation from American Skiing Company is complete, but the sale doesn't mean much for Rocky Mountain Super Pass holders - at least for now.

Intrawest spokesperson Matt Sugar said season pass operations will remain status quo for this season, meaning Steamboat season passes can't be used at other local Intrawest resorts - Copper Mountain or Winter Park - and vice-versa.

"Looking out into the future we're certainly looking at those things, but nothing has been determined at this point," Sugar said.

Steamboat president Chris Diamond told The Steamboat Pilot & Today changes could occur in pass offerings.

"There's probably a product that would be very attractive to the Front Range market that has some sort of Steamboat option," Diamond said. "We just don't know what it is."

Early season prices for adult Steamboat season passes are $935, while the Rocky Mountain Super Pass, good at both Copper Mountain and Winter Park, sells for $369.

The sale, which was first announced in December and was finalized on Thursday, adds a third ski area to Intrawest's Colorado portfolio. Intrawest owns Copper Mountain and manages Winter Park on a long-term lease with the city of Denver.

The $265 million acquisition also includes 13 restaurants, management of the Steamboat Grand Resort Hotel and certain development rights.

"This acquisition increases our capacity to reach new customers and represents a significant step for Intrawest in our strategy to become the undisputed world leader in the development and management of experiential destination resorts," said Alex Wasilov, president and chief operating officer of Intrawest.

David Barry, Intrawest's chief operation officer for mountain resorts told The Steamboat Pilot & Today it was too early to talk about any specific plans for capital improvements at the ski area, but that those discussion would be taking place in light of the transaction closing.

The Steamboat sale comes about four months after Fortress Invesment Group LLC acquired Intrawest for $2.8 billion.

Steamboat began operating in 1963 and sees more than one million visitors each winter.

The Vancouver-based Intrawest now has interests in 11 North American ski resorts including Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia.
