SUMMIT COUNTY The first time Lisa Knobel saw the Summit Concert Band perform at the Founders Day festivities in Frisco, she knew she wanted to join. Now president of the local club, trumpet player Knobel is one of about 25 core members who bring music to county events like the Fourth of July, Oktoberfest and Fairplays Burro Days every year.
In fact, the nonprofit performs 13 free concerts a year in Summit and surrounding areas.
The band begins its 25th season Thursday with a free spring concert at 7 p.m. at the Lord of the Mountains Lutheran Church in Dillon.
Formed in 1982 when a group of Summit locals came together to perform on a float in Breckenridges Ullr Fest parade, the band now includes members from Summit, Lake, Park, Clear Creek and Grand counties. First it would be called the Summit Community Band, later changing to the Summit Concert Band.
The community concert band format allows musicians of all abilities and experience to have fun making music together.
Many part-time residents and vacationers join in for rehearsals and performances and Summit High School students join in for more practice and performance opportunities.
Members include music teachers, performing professionals, music school graduates and those who play for fun.
Thursday nights program includes some of the bands favorites from over the years and those back by popular demand.
Antero Fanfare composed by Dan Timbrell, a new member of the band, will kick off the evening followed by Percy Graingers Handel In The Strand, a lighthearted piece arranged for concert band. The show will also feature the sentimental folk song Shenandoah arranged by Frank Ticheli and the folk dance, Puszta, by Jan Van der Roost. The second half will begin after an intermission with the march, On the Mall.
The second half will also include selections from Man of La Mancha, the ragtime With Pleasure and Aaron Coplands Hoe Down. The finale will be George Gershwins Japanese. Conductor James Knapp will be leading the band through the program.
A fundraiser breakfast for the Summit Concert Band will be held on May 20 at the Elks Lodge to raise money for new performance shirts and jackets for the band.
