Tigers lose 4-3 before spring break

GOLDEN - The Summit High School tennis team's inability to practice on Tuesday proved to be a bad omen for the Lady Tigers in their match against Golden on Wednesday.

In what was supposed to be its home opener, SHS lost 4-3 at the Colorado School of Mines.

"The girls looked a little flat," said SHS coach Kate Walker, who had to arrange last-minute transportation for her team in the wake of recent snowstorms. "I don't think anyone would say they played their best game today."

While April accumulation has kept local skiers excited about winter, the recent weather has seemingly disrupted the SHS tennis team, which was unable to find indoor practice time Tuesday.

Summit's top two singles players, Alex Critz-Culp and Anicia Santos both won their Wednesday matches 6-3, 7-5, while No. 3 player Whitney Degerberg lost 6-4, 4-6, 5-7.

The Tigers No. 1 doubles team of Kali Turrin and Megan Hollenbeck lost 2-6, 6-7; No. 2 Tiana Shelton and Megan Hartman lost 3-6, 2-6; No. 3 Holly Westwood and Jodi Houghtaling won 1-6, 6-3, 6-2; and the No. 4 tandem of Marie and Julie Oberriter lost 6-1, 1-6, 3-6.

Walker will have to settle for a mark of 7-3 as the Lady Tigers enter spring break.

"It was disappointing," the first-year coach said of Wednesday's result. "That was a match that we conceivably could have pulled out."

Although Walker will not hold practice next week, she seemed confident her players would keep playing tennis during their respite from academics.

"Most of the girls will be out of town," Walker said. "But pretty much everyone is going to a warm-weather climate, so tennis will be played."

Summit has 12 days off before its next match, April 24 at home against Alameda. Last year's squad, which sent one singles player and one doubles team to the state tournament, was 4-2 entering spring break.

The Alameda match, which was originally scheduled for today at Farmer's Korner, is now slated to be played in Keystone.

Following its contest with the Pirates, SHS has just one remaining match (D'Evelyn) before the regional tournament, which is set for Colorado Springs during the first weekend in May.
