Environmental stewards honored on Earth Day

FRISCO — Summit County leaders in environmental stewardship in were honored for their work with Green Scene Awards at the Annual Earth Day Action Fair.

”The nominees were amazing this year,” Karn Stiegelmeier, chair of the Blue River Group, Sierra Club, said in a press release. “We are fortunate to have so many dedicated individuals committed to greener practices in Summit County.”

State Representative, Dan Gibbs presented the awards to the winners who were nominated by the community at the Sunday fair in Frisco.

The following are Green Scene Award winners 2007:

• Jaime Sherman and Jenny Wischmeyer won the Organic Fertilizer Award for teachers in the community who offer great education projects for students in an effort to teach proper care for the earth.

• Andy McIntyre and Ken Brown received the Essential Earthy Employee Award that goes to a co-worker or employee who advocates for environmental practices to be instituted within the workplace.

• Julie Sutor and Jocelyn Mills were awarded the Green Machine Public Works which goes to a worthy government official who goes beyond the government standard for environmental programs.

• The Breckenridge Elementary School Green Team won the Lisa Simpson Outstanding Youth Award for youths working to better the environment, just as Lisa Simpson does in the cartoon.

• Green Limousine Business owner, Seth Bounds, received the Greener Summit Business Award for a local business that makes an effort to institute environmental programs/projects for their employees and/or their customers/clients.

• Scott Fussell was chosen for the Wild Wilderness Wonders award that recognizes an individual who works to protect Wilderness or Wilderness qualities.

• Donna Rushing won The Sprouting Program Award honoring those who do the work of founding a new program that conserves or protects.
