Thursday's Our Future Summit, Forum on Immigration was a resounding success. Panel members provided important information regarding the impact of immigration on Summit County schools, business, health care and the general well being of our community. The event was well attended. Questions addressed to panel members were insightful and well thought out.
The cordiality of the evening was marred when, following the event, a man identified in a 2005 Summit Daily News article as a Minute Man volunteer, physically confronted SDN columnist Cesar Munoz regarding his response to that article. The incident was quickly squelched by the timely intervention of Summit County Sheriff John Minor. This "Minute Man's" use of profanity and physical intimidation could be written off as the acts of a self described "hot-head" were they not the classic tactics of the Minute Men Project to which he belongs.
The Minute Men's xenophobic agenda of gutter racism is not limited to armed intimidation of immigrants on the boarder. Confrontations between citizens and Minute Men have recently occurred on the streets of Los Angeles and in the halls of Columbia University. The Southern Poverty Law Center has documented that many of the Minute Men Project participants belong to neo-Nazi and neo-fascist organizations such as the National Alliance and the Arian Nations. The connection between these groups is demonstrated as much by their tactics as it is by their politics.
Thursday night's harassment of Munoz is just another example of ongoing efforts by the Minute Men to discourage those brave enough to speak out against their message of hatred and fear.
