FARMERS KORNER The playoff picture got brighter for the Summit High School football team Friday after the Tigers defeated Mountain Range 39-11 at home.
The Tigers (6-2, 3-1 in the 3A Central Metro League) fourth consecutive win put them into a three-way tie for second place in the seven-team 3A Central Metro. (Rock Canyon is in the lead at 4-1). Only the league winner and possibly one wild-card team will make the postseason.
It was definitely a must-win, but all of our games are said SHS wide receiver Stephen Ike, who came back from a broken leg to make his season debut on Friday. We take each one as it comes and plan to win.
Weve been waiting to play this well for a long time, said Summit quarterback Landon Greve, who threw for 212 yards (10-of-17) and caught two interceptions The whole team came together.
Mountain Range (5-3, 3-1 in 3A Central Metro) scored first on a 29-yard field goal by Marquis Fitzpatrick 3 minutes into the contest. Greves lone interception of the game, which he committed on his first pass, set up the Mustangs scoring drive. The guests were forced to settle for three points after Summits staunch defense shut them down on three downs. Jordan Sitkoski and Zach Campbell each made timely tackles before Sitkoski sacked Mountain Range QB Dylan Buononato.
Our defensive play was definitely the highlight of the game, Tigers coach Dylan Hollingsworth said. If (the defense) hadnt played so well, it would have been tough (to win).
Summits offense started clicking early too.
Josh Kroening (103 receiving yards) gave Summit a lead it never lost 4 minutes into the game when he scored on a 78-yard touchdown pass from Greve. The Tigers tandem struck again less than 3 minutes later on a 32-yard completion to make it 13-3.
Talon Roggaschs 36-yard touchdown reception at the beginning of the second quarter gave Summit, which hasnt lost at home since Oct. 2005, even more breathing room.
The Mustangs cut the Tigers lead to eight points with 11:05 remaining in the second quarter after a 68-yard touchdown run by Buononato and a subsequent two-point conversion.
But Scott Campbell (9-yard run) and Kroening (6-yard reception) padded Summits lead with first-half touchdowns and the hosts took a 32-11 lead into halftime.
Roggasch (137 rushing yards) scored the games final TD with 8:06 left in the game on a 5-yard pass from Greve. Summit got great field position after Bobby Dreyer tackled Mountain Ranges punter, who was recovering a botched snap, on the 5 yard line.
The Tigers dominated all around in their final home game of the regular season.
I feel like the momentum has picked up tenfold, Sitkoski said. I cant explain exactly when it happened, but weve picked it up in practice the last few weeks.
Summits quest for a return trip to the 3A playoffs continues Friday at Rock Canyon and the following Saturday at Castle View.
