Immigrants at Care Clinic

As evidenced by the recent "Our Future Summit" forum and the letters to the editor that followed, Summit County people are passionate about immigration. While the majority of Summit Community Care Clinic's patients are not immigrants, we do serve a diverse population of uninsured, limited-income people who live or work in Summit County. The following information will give SDN readers accurate information regarding the services we have offered to more than 2,800 patients in 2007:

Language: 55 percent of our patients prefer English, 42 percent Spanish, and 3 percent other languages (mostly European).

Ethnicity: Similarly, 53 percent of our patients self-report as being non-Hispanic (mostly Caucasians and Africans).

Patient fees: Services are not free, but are discounted 60-90 percent off of community rates. While no one is turned away due to inability to pay, we do collect on 85 percent of our charges, and patient fees represent more than 20 percent of our budget.

Financial support: Care Clinic relies on a mixture of private and public sources to sustain our services. Summit County and other governmental groups support our services, but the majority of funding comes from private sources. In fact, dollar for dollar, our best supporters are local healthcare partners who provide donations and discounted services for our patients. Summit Medical Center alone has committed to providing over $100,000 in in-kind, non-emergent services to our patients this year. According to our bylaws and daily operations, we are a non-political organization and have no official stance on immigration issues. We require that our staff comply completely with the rules of all of our funding sources, and forfeit considerable funding as a result of our diligence. However, we remain committed to ensuring access to quality, affordable, and compassionate healthcare for all who live or work in Summit County.

Our belief is that Summit County gains clear financial and health benefits by having:

• The vital working class on the job;

• Sniffle-free students in school; and

• Uninsured patients engaged in preventative care rather than costly ER usage.
