BRECKENRIDGE — From the writer of “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change,” comes a touching comedy about “family, faith and food.”

“Over the River and Through the Woods” opens Saturday at the Breckenridge Theatre.

“It’s a perfect play for the holidays,” said Christopher Willard who co-directs the play along with Wendy Moore. Moore once again plays double duty as director and an actress in this piece. She is joined on stage by her husband Bob Moore (who also designed the set) and daughter Missy Moore. The cast is rounded out by Jack Wefso as Nick, Richard ‘Ziggy’ Eisner as Frank and Lin Foa as Aida.

Nick is a single, Italian-American guy from New Jersey. His parents have retired and moved to Florida, but that doesn’t mean his family isn’t still in New Jersey. In fact, he sees both sets of his grandparents every Sunday for dinner.

This is his routine — until he has to tell them that he’s been offered a dream job that will take him to Seattle and away from them. When he tells them, the news doesn’t sit well. Thus begins a series of schemes (including bringing to dinner the lovely — and single — Caitlin O’Hare) as the grandparents do their best to keep Nick from moving away.

“Ultimately it’s about where our lives go,” Willard said. “We get to be a certain age and families tend to separate sometimes ... Letting them go on with their life can be a hard thing.”

The set has three parts with a dining room, living room and porch area.

“It feels just like being at your grandparents home,” Willard said.

“Over the River and Through the Woods” opens Saturday with a Champagne Evening event which includes champagne and hors d’oeuvres. Tickets for this show are $25; all other shows are $18.
