ASPEN - Pitkin County residents are the biggest contributors to charities, giving an average of $12,978 per donor, according to a recent report.
Eagle County was second, averaging $8,477 per donor, according to the study "The State of Giving" by the Colorado Nonprofit Association and financed by several foundations.
The study focused on six regions in the state. Using federal tax data collected in Colorado for the 2005 tax year, the most recent year available, the report based its findings on information gleaned from zip codes and income levels.
Vail topped all Colorado cities and towns with an average contribution of $15,674 per donor. Aspen, Woody Creek, Avon and Snowmass completed the top five.
Manassa, a town of about 1,000 in the San Luis Valley, was the most generous in percentage of income given to charity. Residents of the town in Conejos County, which state figures show had Colorado's state's third-lowest per capita personal income in 2005, donated an average of 9.7 percent of their income.
Residents of Pitkin County, which was first in per capita income, gave 4.2 percent of their income to charity in 2005. The U.S. average was 3.6 percent of income and the state average of 3.4 percent.
Delta County residents gave 5.3 percent of their income to nonprofits, making them the most generous in the Northwest region, which includes Eagle and Pitkin counties.
The metro Denver region, composed of seven counties, ranked last, averaging 3.3 percent of income given to charity.
The study noted that Coloradans with adjusted incomes under $50,000 gave 5.2 percent of their earnings to charity in 2005. Those earning between $75,000 to $100,000 donated 3 percent.
Altogether, Coloradans gave $3.8 billion in gifts to charity in 2005, up 13 percent increase from 2004. The average contribution increased by 10.5 percent in 2005, while the adjusted gross income of Coloradans who filed 1040 tax returns rose by 7 percent.
The report was not all upbeat. Colorado ranks 36th nationally when it comes to percentage of income giving to charity, while the state ranks fifth in average income.
