SUMMIT COUNTY Piece by piece, the final sections of Summit Countys rec path system are falling into place. But there is still a ways to go.
By the end of July, a new 1.7-mile stretch between Summit Cove and the Lowry Campground along Swan Mountain Road should be ready for use, said Chris Hart, chair of the nonprofit Friends of Swan Mountain Recpath.
We are excited that (this) segment of the recpath will be finished this summer and people will be able to ride up and back, Hart said.
Completion of this section will allow path users to avoid 2.2 miles of Swan Mountain Road and provide safe passage for cyclists.
The next goal is to complete the .7 mile link from Lowry Campground to the parking lot at Sapphire Point, with fundraising well under way. The Friends group is aiming to raise about $362,500 via donations, about 20 percent of the total $1.9 million tab. If all goes as planned, that section could be built during the summer of 2008.
The next chance to pitch in comes today at an evening fundraiser at the Silvethorne Pavilion. Local favorite Doo Wop Denny will headline an evening of music and dancing, along with Nancy Cook and Sal Mancini. There also will be a silent auction.
Our annual benefit concert and silent auction are a big part of our private fundraising efforts, Hart said. More than 500,000 people use the countys recpaths each year and everyone agrees providing a safe path over Swan Mountain Road will be a huge amenity.
Among the items that have been donated for the silent auction are a pontoon cruise on Lake Dillon, a wine tasting from the Frisco Wine Merchant, gift certificates from High Country Auto, the Buffalo Gallery, Wyatt West and the Cornflower Boutique, and the Next Page bookstore. Other items include Scandinavian items from Scandia Butik and a French tablecloth from A Touch of Provence.
Tickets are $25 per person, $400 for a table of eight in the first two rows, or $300 for a table of eight in the third and fourth rows. Tickets are available by calling the Northwest Colorado Council of Governments office at (970) 468-0295 X123 and seating is limited.
We want to especially thank our musicians, who are donating their time, the auction donors, as well as our event sponsors. Without their help, this wouldnt be possible, Hart said.
Event sponsors include Colorado State Bank and Trust, N.A., Summit Biking, the Summit Daily News, and the Town of Silverthorne.
