Up Against the Wall: Son takes father’s car on a DUI joyride

Up Against the Wall

Up Against the Wall appears biweekly. All accounts are rewritten from Summit County law enforcement agency logs. Names are withheld for privacy; individuals are assumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

SUMMIT COUNTY — A man who had a little too much fun at the bars in Copper had to answer to police when he stole his father’s car and crashed it into a snowbank.

The man claimed he visited every bar on the mountain before swiping his father’s keys for a joyride to get some food. Police met with the father once they arrived on scene, and although the father chose not to press charges for theft, he did want police to take the necessary action regarding a possible DUI.

Police found the young man in the bathroom where he immediately put his hands behind his back and declared: “I’m guilt of stealing a vehicle and being drunk. I’m guilty so now arrest me.”

Police attempted to conduct some voluntary roadside maneuvers, but after the man “refused, refused, refused,” he was taken to the Summit County Jail and booked on DUI, Driving Under Suspension, and Careless Driving.

Questioned for theft, busted for drugs

A local resort manager put a call into police after they became suspicious that a male employee was stealing from one of the condos he was responsible for cleaning.

Police contacted the employee who denied taking anything from the room and said that police could check his apartment if they wanted.

Before heading to the apartment, police informed the man that they would have to pat him down for safety measures, and that is when the truth began to spill out.

The man admitted he was carrying a falsified identification, and he also admitted that he had a pipe on him used to smoke marijuana. Also in the bag with the pipe were three tinfoil wrapped sugar cubes coated in LSD.

In his defense, the man explained that he had an extensive history of drug abuse and stated that LSD was not bad at all.

Police didn’t seem to sympathize and the man was arrested on possession of a Schedule III drug and transported to the Summit County Jail.

Frantic woman attempts to chase down driver

A woman decided to take the law into her own hands after a reckless driver almost hit her vehicle while she was attempting to make a right-hand turn through a yellow light.

In an attempt to bring the driver the justice the woman started following the car through town as she dialed 911.

The driver soon caught wind of the fact that he was being tailed and got out of the car with three other passengers to investigate the vehicle that was following him down every street in town.

According to the woman, the four individuals approached her car and started pounding on the windows before suddenly leaving the scene.

Police were able to contact the alleged reckless driver who admitted to almost hitting the woman’s vehicle and claimed they “knocked” on the window to try to reason with her.

The woman later changed her story stating that they might have knocked but she was so distraught over the incident that she couldn’t think clearly.

Police advised the woman that she should leave the investigative work to them and that following a reckless driver through town only created more danger for her.

Powder days distract man from court

A warrant was issued for a man who failed to appear in court and police were then dispatched to his residence to bring him in to jail.

An officer arrived at the man’s apartment to find the door already open with the man walking towards the door from the kitchen.

The man stated he was aware of the missed court date and was then promptly arrested and transported to the Summit County Jail.

On the way to the jail, the man reflected on his mistake stating: “I forgot about the court date with all the skiing I’ve been doing.”
