WINTERBERG, Germany — Breckenridge’s Katie Uhlaender secured her second overall World Cup title today after winning bronze in the World Cup finale in Winterberg, Germany.

Uhlaender claimed the 2008 World Cup trophy by 71 points over Canada’s Michelle Kelly after winning six medals this season, four of them gold.

“This was a great end to the season,” Uhlaender said. “I’m stoked, and I can’t wait to compete in World Championships in Altenberg to fight for the World Championship title as well.”

In Friday’s competition, Uhlaender took to the starting line wearing the yellow World Cup leader bib. Powering off the block with a start time of 5.49 seconds, Uhlaender finished with a first run time of 59.35 seconds to break the track record. Uhlaender watched as the record continued to fall throughout the heat, placing her in fourth position entering the second run.

Improving her start time with a 5.44 push, Uhlaender slid to the finish with a down time of 59.27 seconds, second fastest of the heat.

Standing at the finish, Uhlaender cheered as her combined time of 1:58.62 seconds bettered the next competitor, Canada’s Mellisa Hollingsworth, guaranteeing Uhlaender at least a bronze medal in the World Cup finale.

“It was a lot of fun today,” Uhlaender said. “It was a pretty close race at the end, but that’s what makes good competition.”

North Americans claimed the top three spots in overall World Cup standings.

Uhlaender finished the season with 1670 points for the title. Canada’s Kelly finished 71 points behind the American to finish second in overall World Cup rank with 1599 points. Kelly’s teammate Hollingsworth finished third with 1458 points.

Uhlaender also won the overall title for the 2006-2007 World Cup season.
