More than 30 Summit County Rescue Group volunteers, law enforcement and rescue dogs are conducting a search Saturday afternoon for 23-year-old Alphonse “Michael” Barbiere, who was last seen at 1:18 a.m. early Friday morning leaving Cecilia’s, 520 S. Main St., according to Breckenridge police.
BRECKENRIDGE — A 23-year-old New Jersey resident on vacation with friends is still missing after he left a Breckenridge bar late Thursday night.
More than 30 Summit County Rescue Group volunteers, law enforcement and rescue dogs conducted a search Saturday for Alphonse “Michael” Barbiere, who was last seen at 1:18 a.m. early Friday morning leaving Cecilia’s, 520 S. Main St., according to Breckenridge police.
“We have no idea what happened,” Assistant Police Chief Greg Morrison said.
Search and rescue members called off the search at dark Saturday night with expectations to widen the search at first light on Sunday.
Breckenridge police issued a release saying Barbiere, of Wyckoff, N.J., was “highly intoxicated” when he left into a blizzard early Friday morning, according to his friends. Barbiere, a white man with brown hair and brown eyes, then headed north on Main Street wearing a black and gray ski jacket, jeans and tan boots.
At 12:22 p.m. on Friday, Barbiere’s friends and family, who chose not to speak publicly, reported the young man missing. Five hours later when they still had not heard from him, police began the search. Barbiere’s family and friends quickly joined the effort, distributing flyers with his picture in bars and restaurants across town.
By Saturday morning, the search team grew as Summit County sheriff deputies and an avalanche dog from the Vail Mountain Rescue Group were asked to assist.
Throughout the day, rescuers cleared much of the area between the night club and the condo where Barbiere was staying at the Trails End Condominiums at 455 Village Road, Morrison said. That half-mile distance was large enough to complicate the search, though, so rescuers used dogs in areas around Maggie Pond and the Blue River.
When the rescue team still found nothing, they gathered around maps looking for other possible places the young man could be.
“You would have assumed he would have tried to head back to his condo,” Morrison said. “But we haven’t found a thing.”
