Special to the Daily
Good morning and welcome to Summit Up, the world’s only daily column that can’t believe we are changing our clocks ahead already.

It seems as though it was just yesterday when we “fell back” and it started getting dark at about 3 in the afternoon, and now were going ahead again.

We actually prefer the “spring ahead” time of year because it means spring is almost here and the days will be longer. Though we aren’t thrilled about losing that hour of sleep in the morning, we’re OK with it because the sun will shine later than 5 this evening.

Just for the sake of research, we thought we’d look up Daylight Saving Time (DST) and share a few fun facts.

1. Prominent English builder and outdoorsman William Willett invented DST in 1905 during one of his pre-breakfast horseback ride, when he observed how many Londoners slept through the best part of a summer day.

So, basically it was invented by a morning person who thought everyone in the city was lazy.

2. Germany, it’s World War I allies and their occupied zones were the first European nation to us use Willet’s invention, starting on April 30, 1916.

3. The U.S. Department of Transportation concluded in 1975 that DST might reduce the country’s electricity usage by 1 percent during March and April, but the National Bureau of Standards reviewed the DOT study in 1976 and found no significant energy savings.

There you have it. Impress all your friends with you new DST knowledge.

Moving on, we have a congratulations to send out to Lori Richmond, a student of Sahn Tae Kwon Do.

Lori will be competing in the Colorado State Tae Kwon Do Championship in Castle Rock on March 15. She has also been asked to attend the Female Athletes International Tae Kwon Do Camp in June. This is a two-week camp at the U.S. Tae Kwon Do Center where she and others from around the world will be trained by Olympic athletes and coaches in World Tae Kwon Do Federations style sparring.
Best of luck Lori!
