New bill offers incentives for beetle-kill removal

SUMMIT COUNTY " Rep. Christine Scanlan is co-sponsoring a new bill that could help in removing some of the dead and dying lodgepole pines that have become highly susceptible to wildfire.

House Bill 1269 establishes incentives for businesses that salvage and make products from lodgepole pines killed by the mountain pine beetle.

"Hopefully, these incentives will help drive a sustainable industry and speed the removal of some of the dead trees that might otherwise fuel a devastating fire," said Scanlan. "But more " a lot more " must be done."

Last year, a bill presented by Rep. Gibbs, now a state senator, was passed into law, and garnered $1 million for neighborhood fire mitigation.
