DENVER - The Summit High School tennis team lost a well-fought match to Conifer, 4-3 Thursday in Denver.
"One of the things we need to work on is finishing matches," Tigers coach Dave Turrin said after his team fell to 3-3 overall. "We're just on the brink."
Summit got victories from Kali Turrin at No. 3 singles (7-6, 6-4), Megan Hartman and Tiana Shelton at No. 1 doubles (7-6, 5-7, 6-2) and Rosa Foth and Sophia Bolt at No. 4 doubles (6-3, 6-2).
Dave Turrin seemed pleased with the continued tenacity of Hartman and Shelton, who are both seniors.
"They have refused to lose in the third set so far this season," he said. "Last year they lost of number of matches in the third. ... I think it's a maturity issue."
Foth and Bolt are on the opposite end of the high-school age spectrum, but they already seem to be developing strong chemistry.
"It's nice to see that kind of tennis from two freshmen in the four spot," Dave Turrin said.
Top singles players Alex Critz-Culp and Megan Hollenbeck both took losses for Summit (2-6, 2-6 and 1-6, 3-6, respectively).
Marie and Julie Oberriter lost 3-6, 6-3, 2-6 at No. 2 singles and Ashley Dankof and Ali Hartley fell 5-7, 7-5, 4-6 at No. 4.
Summit won't compete again until April 2.
Boys lacrosse team outmans Englewood
LAKEWOOD - It's tough to win a lacrosse game with only one sub. In fact, it's difficult to even compete.
Englewood's small squad was no match for Summit High on Thursday as the Tigers cruised to a 15-0 victory.
"Sixteen is the absolute minimum we would play with," SHS coach Jay Beckerman said after the drubbing. "I really wouldn't feel comfortable going to a game with any less than that."
Braxton Campbell proved to be a major thorn in the Pirates' side by netting seven goals and distributing six assists.
Beckerman anticipated a one-sided contest and told his players before the game to focus on playing with class and practicing fundamentals.
Summit, which is now 2-2, lost to Wheat Ridge 8-4 on Wednesday.
