Special to the Daily/Bob Bloch
The Town Hall Children’s Theatre recently announced the opening of the, “The Hobbit.”

The production of J.R.R. Tolkien’s story, which ran at the Backstage Theatre last summer, will make its Denver premiere at Town Hall Arts Center, located at 2450 W. Main St. in Littleton, opening April 28 and running through May 8.

Shows are at 10 a.m. and noon, Mondays through Thursdays with one Saturday show on May 3 at 10 a.m. Although all shows may be purchased by the general public, school and youth groups are particularly encouraged to take advantage of the weekday shows. Tickets are $6 for children and $7 for adults.

In this new adaptation, it is the eve of Bilbo Baggin’s 111th birthday. Bilbo’s nephew Frodo and the other young hobbits have convinced Bilbo to tell his amazing story.

And so with a little magical help from the wizard Gandalf, before our very eyes, the greatest adventure of the humble hobbit unfolds.

“The Hobbit” is directed by Geoffrey Kent (”Cowboy Macbeth”), written by award-winning writer Christopher Willard (”Belle and the Beast,” “Tribal Tales of Africa,” “Hidden”) and featuring the puppetry of Cory Gilstrap (”Pee Wee’s Playhouse” “Walden Family Playhouse”). Mary Lorch designed costumes. Makeup is by Diana Ben-Kiki. Props are by BJ Knapp. Music is by Keith Ewer. Guy Wright is lead technician.

The cast includes Peter Burghardt as Bilbo, Jack Wefso as Gandalf, Nathan Cooper as Frodo, Jess Robblee as Pippin, Seth Maisel as Sam, and Rachel Turner as Rosie.

In striving to make this a unique, educational experience as well as a fun-filled hour of theater, each instructor will receive a “Teacher’s Guide” with suggested fun and informative activities on how to make their theater excursion support Colorado’s Model Content Standards.

For reservations and more information, call Town Hall Arts Center at (303) 794-2782 ext. 5.
