BRECKENRIDGE This week, 37 speakers from throughout the state, country and world will be arriving in Breckenridge to tackle a variety of topics on the subject of technology and education.
Every one (of them) are leaders in terms of education, said Reid Cornwell, Ph.D.
Cornwell, of Frisco, is the director of the Focus on Education Foundation and the original founding president. And the conference, Innovation 2008: The Real and the Ideal, is presented by Innovate, the journal of online education, and the Focus on Education Foundation, along with corporate sponsors. It will be held throughout Monday and Tuesday at the Beaver Run Resort and Conference Center in Breckenridge.
This is the third in a series of five conferences and the first one held in Summit County the place where Focus on Education Foundation has its roots.
In 1997, when Summit School District went into a bit of a funding crisis with TABOR a group of local citizens founded Focus on Education Foundation to find creative ways to improve education, Cornwell said. Then as Summit County advanced in its commitment in public education ... it morphed from looking at the local issues to entirely looking at the state and the nation, he continued.
Education across the US is in a state of crisis, Cornwell said, adding that low graduation rates is one of the issues.
Also, even those who graduate and go onto to college need remediation, he said.
Throughout the years, Focus on Education has covered a variety of topics. The idea is to bring attention to the facts and try to suggest positive solutions for improving areas of education across the country, even pushing colleges to improve the way teachers are educated, Cornwell said.
This year, Innovation 2008 will bring together researchers, educators, and government and business leaders to formulate a vision for the future of education, according to the conference website. The conference aims at a realistic appraisal of the present state of education and an assessment of what current realities indicate for the future, coupled with constructive and well-informed speculation about how change can be better managed to serve the need of students, educators, parents, industry and society as a whole.
The conference is open to the public. Anyone interested in attending, reading about the speakers or learning more, should visit education-2008.org. There is an on-line registration on the site.
According to the conference website, We believe that bringing together leaders in education, business, academia and government in a conference environment organized around these themes will produce significant new ideas, perspectives and initiatives.
