Man who torched grade school sentenced to 6 years in prison

Print Comment
ARVADA — An Arvada man is being ordered to spend six years in prison for starting an arson fire that caused nearly 6.5 million dollars in damage to an elementary school.

Twenty-year-old Tyler John Newhart had pleaded guilty to charges of arson and burglary in February.

Newhart received six-year sentences for each during a hearing Thursday, but Judge Jane Tidwell said the terms could be served concurrently.

The June 1 fire at Weber Elementary School caused extensive damage to the building, including classrooms, the computer room and the library. It took crews until October to complete repairs.

Newhart will also be ordered to pay restitution after the exact amount of the loss can be determined.
