BRECKENRIDGE Š The Town of Breckenridge's Outdoor Recreation staff plans to lead a trip to Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico. This is an experiential adult program, which includes environmental education and outdoor adventure. The program will take place from April 25-29, with a required pre-trip briefing on April 18.
This trip will include camping in the backcountry of Carlsbad Caverns National Park, exploring the area and learning about the flora and fauna of the park. Trip leaders will take participants into horizontal caves and explore the subterranean features of the park. They will teach the fundamentals of caving and provide a geology lesson in the process.
Along the way, participants will enter Goat Cave, one of the fragile backcountry caves in the park. This is a good cave for beginners, which consists of one main corridor over a thousand feet long, 40 to 200 feet wide, and has a ceiling height of up to 100 feet.
This program will run five days long, with two of those days being traveling days. Basic camping gear will be required, as well as a few caving-specific items. All items can be purchased at local outdoor stores in Summit County. Most meals will be provided.
