SUMMIT COUNTY — The digital era has opened up opportunities and presented challenges to many; significant among them are artists in the business of photography.

The internet and advances in digital equipment have greatly increased photographers’ access to exposure, while at the same time created issues with widespread distribution and a fall in prices.

Boulder-based motorcycle photographer Michael Lichter has weathered the business the past 30 years through a passion for bikes, and by following his heart in business.

Lichter said he bought his first Harley at the age of 22, and started shooting all things related to the bike while riding it back from California. Since then he has retained his focus on the subject, and an abundance of has work opened up for him.

“Without a business plan, we do things that feel right,” Lichter said. He started his website in 1998 with the intention of posting a portfolio of his work. He now has three websites. The www.lichterphoto.com is for visitors who just want to look at his body of photographs; www.lichtereditions.com is a site containing Lichter’s limited edition work; and www.lichterstock.com is where he sells his stock images.

His success has been found in diversifying a singular passion. Along with a range of between 70,000 and 130,000 hits on his main lichterphoto.com website per month, Lichter has a variety of publication work, traveling around the country and world covering motorcycle events. (A recent trip to a bike rally in Florida is featured in the current issues of Easyriders and V-Twin magazines.)

He also exhibits his limited edition works, has two motorcycle art shows he is in charge of curating coming up this summer, and has published eight coffee table books, along with calendars and posters.

Lichter will be speaking at the Summit County Community and Senior Center on Friday, May 2 with a slide show that will encapsulate a viewing of his work and a talk on the business of photography.

Local photographer, member of the American Society of Media Photographers and owner of Studio Kiva Photography in Breckenridge, Katie Girtman, has arranged the event through her role with the ASMP.

Girtman said she believes the art community will gain the most from the talk, but said there is also an element of following your passion which anyone can relate to in Lichter’s presentation.

Girtman is working toward hosting more events through the ASMP in the mountains. Visit www.studiokiva.com for more information on Girtman.
