ASPEN — A 46-year-old skier has died after falling more than 1,000 feet on the eastern side of Mount Sopris near Aspen.

The Pitkin County coroner’s office identified the victim as Lathrop Strang who suffered critical injuries. An autopsy is pending.

Pitkin County sheriff’s officials said Strang was one of four skiers reported about four hours overdue from a ski trip on the mountain. A rescue team recovered the skier’s body Friday night on the peak in the Maroon Bells/Snowmass Wilderness area.
