CONIFER - Next year's high school lacrosse season may be some 300 days away, but Merri McKissock's already thinking about it.
McKissock, the Summit girls lacrosse team's first-year head coach, turned her thoughts to the future soon after her club lost 11-8 at Conifer in Monday's season finale.
"I'm looking forward to next season," said McKissock, who's team finished 5-7-1. "We're only losing three seniors and we have a dozen eighth graders coming in."
The Tigers coach, who led SHS in its first varsity campaign, spoke positively about her team's performance this spring.
"Everyone improved this year," she said. "It seemed like a real team effort."
SHS' typical team effort came together Monday at Conifer after a sluggish opening 10 minutes.
"We weren't that enthusiastic," the coach said of the outset. "We kind of waited for the other team to do what they wanted to do and we chased them."
The hosts, who opened up their biggest lead at 8-3, had to contend with a strong Bobby Bouchard in the Tigers' goal.
"Bobby made 20 saves," McKissock said. "And a couple of plays outside the crease - you don't see a lot of goalies doing that around (Colorado).
Michelle Warpecha led Summit's offensive attack with three goals.
Other tallies came from Jaclin Limone (two), Steph Snyder, Brie Barto and Katie Aceto.
