Army says it will study impacts of Fort Carson growth

FORT CARSON - The Army says it will study the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of its decision to station a new infantry brigade at Fort Carson.

Critics quickly denounced the announcement Wednesday as an attempt to sow confusion about the Army's plans to nearly triple the size of the Pinon Canyon training site 150 miles southeast of the post.

The Army announcement says the Pinon Canyon site would get more use but does not mention the expansion plans.

The military says it needs to expand Pinon Canyon to accommodate growth at Fort Carson and changing weapons and tactics. Opponents fear expansion would hurt the economy by taking land out of agriculture.

The Army says it will also analyze Fort Carson as a potential site for a combat aviation brigade.
