Several Colo. counties decline to use state voter database

Print Comment
DENVER — Many large Colorado counties say they won’t use the state’s new voter registration database after a two-week test found several glitches.

The problems included difficulties in accessing the system from polling sites and a slowdown when many workers were connected at the same time.

The test ended May 2.

The database was required by federal law. It was designed to help county election officials determine whether a voter is eligibile and to help plan and administer elections.

Denver County tried using a similar system in 2006, but an estimated 20,000 voters gave up after waiting in long lines after the system crashed. The county will use a paper system this year.

Weld, Mesa and Larimer counties plan to use their own computer system, while other counties will limit the state’s system.
