Independence Pass opening delayed

Crews hoping for May 30, weather permitting

Print Comment
SUMMIT COUNTY — The Colorado Department of Transportation typically re-opens Independence Pass on SH 82 for the season on the Thursday before the Memorial Day holiday weekend. This year, with the snow pack well above average, crews have set a new target date for opening the pass: Friday, May 30.

Those wanting to travel the pass should be advised that this date could change, says the Colorado Department of Transportation. If weather improves and avalanche control work is successful, the pass could open earlier. Weather could set the date back further, as well, the transportation department reported.
