Private company to patrol Dillon Dam

SUMMIT COUNTY — Denver Water recently hired a local private security company to patrol its facilities at Dillon Reservoir around the Dillon Dam Road.

After talking with local law enforcement officials, Denver Water made the decision to outsource security details to reduce some of the patrol burden on local law enforcement agencies and allow caretakers to solely focus on their day-to-day operations and maintenance duties.

“There will now be a 24/7 security presence on the dam, which will alleviate the burden on both law enforcement and the caretakers,” said Craig Austin, manager of safety and security at Denver Water.

A number of closures last winter, including one lasting nearly two weeks to deal with a potential terrorist threat, forced commuters onto the interstate or Swan Mountain Road. The threat — two snowboarders from Afghanistan filming a video — was quickly investigated and cleared, but road closures continued.

“We will be setting up a security guard station this week and there will be a patrol vehicle presence as well,” Austin added, citing that traffic will not be affected during this addition.

According to Denver Water, the decision to increase security was not a direct result of the security breach that occurred on the dam in early January, but rather a decision that coordinated best with other local agencies.

“Part of our discussions with Denver Water have always included the need for more of a pyhsical security presence,” said Summit County Undersheriff Derek Woodman.

“Our regular duty personnel can’t give that infrastructure the patrol attention it requires, so hiring a private security company will enhance the safety aspect for everyone.”

Authorities said residents may notice future security enhancements on the dam, and Denver Water will be looking to coordinate installations to minimize road closures.
