SUMMIT COUNTY — Weekend freedom celebrations continue, as Colorado liquor stores open on Sunday for the first time in 75 years.
Nearly all of the stores Summit County are open to at least 5 p.m. today, though business expectations vary.
Silverthorne Liquors manager Manuel Contreras said he expects sales to be half or less than weekend norms.
“People usually stock up during Friday and Saturday, and they have Sundays to spend with their families and drink their beer and stuff,” he said, adding that many people won’t drink as much because they work on Monday.
Contreras said his store is open “just to have an experience and see if it’s worth it.”
But Frisco Liquors manager Alan Elders said he anticipates high Sunday liquor sales until football season kicks off.
“I expect the first couple weeks to be crazy,” he said.
The legislation is expected to increase annual liquor sales in Colorado by between 4.4 percent and 9 percent.
The state is one of 34 permitting liquor sale on Sunday, according to a press release from state Rep. Christine Scanlan’s office.
