Playing a bit shorthanded, Breckenridges Gentlemen of the Blue Goose rugby club scored 85 points in their first two games of the Ski Town rugby tournament, on their way to a second-place finish in Missoula, Mont.
Kicking off play last Friday, the Blue Goose dominated Vail 40-0 for their second win over their Mountain League rival in as many games. Nate Yannacone and Lars Swenson led the way for Breck with two tries a piece. Zack Zellars and Brian Jones also punched it over the try-line for the Goose.
Breck kept up their solid play in their second match when they faced off against a squad from Bozeman, Mont. The Goose scored seven tries in the game, on their way to a 45-19 win.
Unfortunately, the championship game didnt have the same outcome for Breck. The Goose fell to Steamboat Springs 28-0.
Despite the loss, and the fact that Steamboat flew in some ringers for the weekend, Goose head coach Peter Clarke said that he was pleased with the
weeks outcome.
Coming in second was an excellent performance for our young team, Clarke said. ... (We) had a few players missing through work and injury, meaning the coaches had to play.
The Gentlemen of the Blue Goose are back in action when they travel to Glenwood Springs Aug. 16.
