Up with People will perform Thursday at Summit High School.
Special to the Daily
FARMER’S KORNER — Lovisa Cehlin traveled from her home country of Sweden to Breckenridge for the kickoff of the Up With People tour which is Thursday at Summit High School.
Up with People, according to a press release, is an “international global education program for young adults.
“The cast members will be performing the ‘Up with People Show,’ a community celebration that features original and international songs and uses the universal languages of music and dance to inspire, energize and educate. The event serves to spark people to action by highlighting local nonprofit organizations and the unique characteristics of communities they visit.”
In Summit County, the group’s focus will be toward education. Kevin Abernathy, a local man who traveled with Up with People for five years, said when the group leaves, locals should be more informed as to how to get involved and help their community. During their time here, Up with People participants will spend two days working on community service projects. Also, proceeds from the concert will go to CMC.
From here, Cehlin and the other 95 students from 22 countries in the group, will travel to Mexico, then back to the United States and then to the Philippines.
While in the various locations, participants stay with host families, offering a better experience of the local culture.
Cehlin is working on the Up with People staff as a marketing intern. When asked what she hopes to get out of the program, she said, “As much as I can. To figure out what I want to be in the future, travel and get to know cultures — see the world.”
