Campaign finance should be bigger priority

Print Comment
Until members of Congress cure their addiction to lobbyists campaign financing they will never cure our addiction to oil. Legislation does not happen because it is the right thing to do.

Unfortunately, legislation is subject to the same laws of motion as physicists Newton’s law of motion, i.e.: “A particle will stay at rest unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force.”

Rarely, is public opinion a sufficient unbalanced force to move legislation against lobbyists campaign contributions.

Further, alternative energy lobbyists do not have the financial recourses to match the oil lobbyists’ contributions and since oil is the biggest loser to alternative energy, the public is in a no-win situation. If only the Supreme Court would not stand in the way of meaningful campaign reform by removing their ridiculous opinion, that prohibiting lobbyists from legally bribing* congress in the form of campaign donations violates freedom of speech, we could balance the external force. (The founding fathers must be turning over in their grave at this interpretation of the 1st Amendment).

The amount of campaign donations should be limited and only from a person entitled to vote for the candidate.
