Colo. official wants aid with immigration costs

DENVER — Colorado Attorney General John Suthers is asking the federal government to help foot the state’s tab for jailing illegal immigrants.

Suthers said in a letter to Colorado’s congressional delegation that it has cost the state $39.8 million to house illegal immigrants in the last fiscal year but the state has only received about $3.3 million in aid from the federal government.

Suthers said in the letter he wants Colorado’s delegation to increase their efforts to help the state with “the immense financial burdens caused by inadequate enforcement of federal immigration laws.”

Departing U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo called Denver part of the problem and said it was a “sanctuary city.”
