Volleyball drops first home game of season

FARMER’S KORNER — Volleyball can be a game of runs. Unfortunately for the Summit High volleyball team Thursday night, nearly every run was made by the visiting team, the Colorado Academy Mustangs.

The Tigers fell behind early in their first home match of the season and couldn’t rebound, eventually losing in straight sets 25-12, 25-5 and 25-10.

“They just are not getting over their errors,” head coach Liz Hughes said of her team’s mentality. “They need to forgive themselves ... and keep playing.”

Though the score may have been lopsided, the Tigers displayed that they have the talent to be successful at this level, despite having very few returning starters from last season.

Junior Julie Oberriter had a team-high five kills, while fellow junior Jeana Holman finished with four. Senior Stephanie Snyder led the team with five digs.

“We need to work together,” Oberriter said. “There were parts (of the game) where we broke down, but we just need to stay together and keep each other excited.”

The Tigers took an early 2-1 lead in the first game, but quickly gave back points on service errors. The Mustangs then went on a 13-4 run.

Summit cut the lead to 15-9, when Oberriter smashed a kill set up by junior Hayley Colvin. But the Tigers couldn’t sustain an attack, and Colorado Academy took the first set 25-12.

Things didn’t get much better in the second set for the Tigers, as Colorado Academy scored the first 18 points. Even though Summit scored the next three points — the first two on kills by Oberriter and sophomore Katie Johnson and the third on an ace served by Colvin — they were down too much too early and fell 25-5.

The final set of the match was back and forth in the early moments with the Tigers taking a 3-2 lead after solid serving from senior Catie Woessner.

Then the Mustangs went on another run and put the match away with a 25-10 win.

“They were really good on passing,” Colvin said of her team’s opponents. “That’s what we need to get down. ... We have a good team; we just need to realize how good we are.”

Hughes also feels that the Tigers problems definitely have nothing to do with their talent level. One example she gave was freshman Noelle Herrick coming off the bench to give the Tigers a huge block in the third game.

“There is hope,” Hughes said. “ ... I think that they just carry the weight of the team on them and freak out when they make mistakes. We need to work on moving forward.”

As the Tigers work on their “forward movement,” as Hughes called it, they will look ahead to a four-game tournament on Saturday.

“Saturday will be good for us,” Hughes said. “You can’t expect to turn it around in the first game, but we have four games to work on it.”
